Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. When she was a young girl she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to word associations. Ford became fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, and joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a month, she decided that it wasn't suitable for her. Ford applied instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime, she had already made her TV debut on the 1991 season from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in a variety of television programs including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. Apart from her regular stage work, Tate was a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. However, Tate soon began to garner notice for her stand-up comedy, which she added to her repertoire in 1996.
